    Module overview

This lecture is an introduction to finance. It aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills in this field and to prepare them for subsequent courses in the Banking and Finance bachelor's program. The course is divided into several parts. The first part covers investment appraisal as well as the basics of corporate financing and valuation. It also explains how banks and insurance companies work and what roles they perform in an economy. The course furthermore addresses the regulation of banks and insurers.

Retained from the earlier FVOEC module texts. The current description in the UZH module catalogue is authoritative.

    Tips from a student perspective

    FVOEC student experience

    • For many students this module is the entry into the world of finance. It has two parts: a rough introduction to corporate finance followed by the banking system. To keep up from the start and prepare well for the exam, keep the following in mind:
    • The script may feel dry, but it is a very important learning resource. It contains everything you must master for the exam. Read each chapter before the lecture so you can immediately connect the new knowledge.
    • Create a formula sheet and study it carefully. Note which variable stands for what; in the exam it is easy to mix them up.
    • The exam often asks for numbers where you first need to rearrange a known formula. Write the required formula on paper and transform it on paper rather than in your head. Then you only have to plug in the numbers to get the result quickly.
    • There are many calculation tasks in the exam, so you must quickly know which formula to use and when.

These notes reflect earlier course editions. Teaching staff, assessments, compulsory coursework, materials, and permitted aids can change.
