    Module overview

This lecture is an introduction to the areas of financial economics and quantitative finance. It aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills in these two areas and to prepare them for subsequent courses in the Banking and Finance bachelor's program. The course is divided into two thematic parts: the first provides an overview of how financial markets and instruments work and introduces the concept of risk and return. The second covers the valuation of bonds and derivatives.

Retained from the earlier FVOEC module texts. The current description in the UZH module catalogue is authoritative.

    What you will learn

    • Know and understand the fundamentals and the most important basic terms and concepts of finance

    Tips from a student perspective

    FVOEC student experience

    • Banking & Finance II is divided into three parts. The first and most exciting part, “Financial Economics,” covers almost all the basics you need to know about financial markets and how they work. The second part, “Basics of Options,” introduces you to options trading, a topic Finance majors will deal with for a long time. The last part, “Basics of Bonds,” covers different bond types, the Taylor polynomial, and many other mathematical concepts—a fitting conclusion.
    • Build a clear formula sheet. It helps you link concepts and keeps you from losing the thread during the exam.
    • Practice the concepts regularly with the self‑learning tool on OLAT. The exercises and explanations are very valuable and help consolidate your finance fundamentals.
    • The theory in the first part, “Financial Economics,” is very important. Learn it well not only for this exam but for the rest of your finance studies—it will be a great help.
