    Module overview

Computers have profoundly changed our lives. To understand today’s society and economy and their constant change, you must understand how computers work and how they reshape our economic environment. The goal of the lecture 'Computer Science for Economists' is to provide a basis for understanding our information‑economy world and succeeding in it.

Retained from the earlier FVOEC module texts. The current description in the UZH module catalogue is authoritative.

    What you will learn

    • How does a computer such as a smartphone work?
    • What are the technical foundations for the diversity of information?
    • How do information systems affect our economic environment?
    • How are information systems used in firms?
    • What is the role of infrastructure?
    • How do you move from objectives to a corresponding computer system in firms and organizations?

    Tips from a student perspective

    FVOEC student experience

    • Unfortunately, the amount of content in this course is disproportionately large relative to the credits. Do not underestimate it.
    • There is no way to pass without memorizing. Exam‑relevant material is scattered across the literature, lectures, learning videos, and exercises. Create your own notes that are both detailed and comprehensive.
    • Always try to read the assigned literature before the lecture and write down what you consider important. You will go through it twice—once after the lecture/videos and once after completing the mandatory exercise for that part—and then adjust your notes as needed.
    • It is tempting to copy answers from classmates in the group chat, especially from previous years. Still, take the time to work through the tasks yourself.
    • Prior Python experience helps, but it is more important to work through the syntax used in the course step by step and practise it yourself.
    • The mock exam is your chance to test how efficient and complete your knowledge is. Do it well before the exam in case you still need to focus on areas you overlooked.
    • You absolutely must master the calculations. They yield many points and are relatively straightforward. Practice them the most.

These notes reflect earlier course editions. Teaching staff, assessments, compulsory coursework, materials, and permitted aids can change.
