Tips from a student perspective
FVOEC student experience
- Mathematics in the economics program goes much deeper than you might expect. School knowledge is reviewed quickly in the first few weeks and then many new concepts follow. To keep up with the fast pace, use these tips:
- Try to solve the exercise before you go to the tutorial. Even if you are fairly sure your solution is wrong, at least you worked through the calculation instead of waiting for solutions. You will understand the official solution much better afterwards.
- Write your own formula sheet. Even if you are not allowed to bring it to the exam, compiling it helps you organize what you have learned and make the right connections. You will feel less overwhelmed and keep the overview.
- Approach difficult functions step by step (especially when differentiating). Most are compositions of basic functions; as long as you know and can apply the basic rules and stay calm, you will handle these calculations quickly in the exam.
- Do the weekly quizzes in Moodle. They are designed as a recap of the week’s content and prompt you to review the material before the next lecture introduces a new topic.
- Work through the mock exams several times (ideally with a timer) to develop a sense for the timing of each task.
These notes reflect earlier course editions. Teaching staff, assessments, compulsory coursework, materials, and permitted aids can change.
